Last summer I had the opportunity to drive through Vancouver Island and visit many small towns. One town that I had to visit, as a muralist, was Chemainus, known as Mural Town.
This little town was dying in the early 1980's when logging and fishing dried up. Taking advantage of Canada's wonderful support of the arts, Chemainus applied for and got the grants to paint outside murals of the history of the town. This brought new life and tourists to view the 42 fabulous murals. A path of yellow footprints guides you through the darling Victorian town with its marvelous murals, painted by 42 fabulous artists. The murals revitalized the town in such a wonderful way that many cities have contacted Chemainus for advice on how they too can become a mural town.
