Governor Victor Atiyeh and his lovely wife Dolores have been our dear friends for over 20 years. The Gov, as we like to call him, was two term governor of Oregon from 1979-1987. Beloved by the Oregonians, today they decided to honor him by naming an airport after him. We were delighted to attend the dedication celebration of the
Governor Victor G. Atiyeh International Concourse.
A wonderful party with many dignitaries, Congressmen, Senators, and of course me, the goofy kids author from L.A.
This was a fabulous day. The Gov was surrounded by his family and friends.
Bill Wyatt, executive director of the port of Portland talk about all the Gov had done for the state.
The Gov's former chief of staff, Gerry Thompson gave the key note, pointing out all he did for international trade, thus earning the nick name of "Trader Vic."
The sculptor, Bill Bane spoke of the honor it was to meet the governor and be chosen to make the statue for the terminal. Which was unveiled.
Finally the Governor spoke. He was funny and clever and moving. But the most inspiring part of the speech was the following.
"People often ask me what it is like to be governor. The responsibility is awesome, the opportunity limitless, the honor rare and the gift of serving priceless."
Congratulations to our buddy the Gov on a well deserved honor!
Yahoo! Just happened to run across this. I remember you being at the event to honor Gov. Vic. I was his chief of staff. You are obviously as fond of him as I. What a guy --- and absolutely the best boss anyone could have.
