As the author of over 100 books, Anastasia Suen is one prolific writer. I had the privilege of hearing Anastasia speak at this years L.A. Writer's Day where she was funny and entertaining. I am so pleased that she agreed to answer a few questions.
When and why did you start writing for children?
I wrote my first book when I was eleven. (We lived in Oxnard at the time. I was going to Fremont Junior High.)
What is the most valuable advice you can give to a newly published writer?
Take small steps! There is SO much to do and it can be overwhelming. So do a little something every day. Rome, a website, a markerting campaign, wasn't built a a day!
What is one of your favorite children's books that you'd like to recommend?
I can never answer this question! (I'm the one who brings a BASKET to the library - and sometimes I go twice a week!)
What is your favorite dessert and why?
*Dark chocolate. (Because you can never have enough chocolate!)
The author of 99 books, I wrote my first book when I was eleven. I wrote in junior high, in high school and in college. (My senior year in college I wrote and illustrated a picture book for a class assignment.)
I started teaching elementary school in 1977. I wrote readers for my first graders and plays for my fifth graders. After my children were born, I stayed home and wrote books for them too. I also started mailing out manuscripts to publishers.
While I was collecting rejection letters, I began working as a consultant <http://www.asuen.com/> in educational publishing. Then it happened. On my fortieth birthday, the phone rang. After writing for twenty-nine years, I had sold my first book!
