I was handed an advance copy of Susan Vaught's new novel, Fat Girl Manifesto by my local independent book seller. It floor me and I wrote to her right away to ask for an interview. I am so pleased that Susan Vaught agreed to be interviewed for the blog.
When and why did you start writing for children?
I started writing for children about ten years
ago, spurred by my son's ravenous desire for
fantasy books.
He had a complicated back surgery scheduled and had to stay in the hospital a while
(and with severely restricted activity at home), so I made my first attempt at a story to amuse
him. I read it to him a chapter at a time, as I got it written.
2. What is the most valuable advice you can give to a newly published writer?
Write the next book! Give voice and life to the characters and stories in your head and heart and
don't stop. Keep moving forward.
3. What is one of your favorite children's book that you would like to recommend?
Just one? Oh, gosh. That's hard. If I have to pick just one, I think it would be Christopher
Paul Curtis's The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963. The voice, the events, and the stunning twists and turns the story takes are breathtaking.
4. What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on an essay for a collection (MG) focusing on Christopher Paolini's
book *Eldest,* a high fantasy/adventure entitled *Oathbreaker* (MG/YA), a contemporary YA I'm
co-authoring with Christine Taylor-Butler that we're calling *Dead Draw* for now, a YA fantasy
romance, and some grown-up pieces as well.
5. What is your favorite dessert and why?
I'd have to say Weight Watcher's chocolate mousse. Aaaaalllll that chocolate, noooooo guilt.
What could be better than that?
Susan Vaught is the author of Trigger, which was called "A powerful
cautionary tale," by Publisher's Weekly in a starred review, and
Stormwitch, winner of the Carl Brandon Society Kindred Award. Both
were named Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library
Association. Her most recent release, Big Fat Manifesto, is already
garnering critical acclaim. She is a practicing neuropsychologist and
lives with her family and dozens of pets in rural Tennessee.
